Know your Body, Know your Somatotype
Somatotyping is a system of classifying body types, based on certain physical characteristics. This theory, introduced by American psychologist William H. Sheldon, comprises 3 body types: Ectomorph, Endomorph, and mesomorph.These are the extremes and in real life, many of us are a combination, having characteristics of more than one body type. However, unhealthy lifestyle and eating habits can also influence your original somatotypes.
Each type reacts differently to food and exercises so by determining your somatotype, you can learn how to make your genes work for you.
The Mesomorph
Think Hugh Jackman. Muscular, broad shoulders, and narrow waist. For women they are blessed with a natural hourglass shape. These body types gain and lose weight more easily.
Eat Right!
To maintain or archieve your ideal figure, just cut back on needless carbohydrate. Option for complex carbohydrate such as whole grains, brown rice, and vegetables. Load up on protein - rich meals such as chicken, fish, and egg white to help sustain muscle bulk.
Work It!
Focus more on cardiovascular exercises and weight training. By building up on your muscle mass, it helps burn more calories
The Ectomorph
Some people might think that the ectomorphs are the lucky ones because they tend to be thin abd tall with high metabolic rates that makes gaining weight a challenge. However, not everyone want to be stick thin or like Kate Moss.
Eat Right!
Eat more but keep it healthy. Take 5 to 7 small meals a day to supply constant fuel to your muscles. Complex carbohydrate such as whole grains, oats, vegetables, and fruits help you bulk up. Protein is a must too and taking a protein supplement is a good option.
Work It!
Go for heavyweight training that focuses on large muscle groups. Muscle building and core training is a good place to start. Also try kickboxing.
The Endomorph
Endomorphs are the ones whot tend to store fat more easily and find weight loss a huge struggle. They are generally shorter with a round body, higher waistline, and shorter arms and legs.
Eat Right!
Fat intake shoulde be kept low and lean protein in moderation. Don't avoid carbohydrate - just go for slow absorbing carbs such as oatmeal, whole wheat bread, and sweet potato. Also, try eating smaller, frequent meals. it keeps the blood sugar level and metabolism up, and helps control the appetite.
Work It!
Hiking, walking, biking, and swimming helps counter your low metabolic rates. Also, look for fun aerobics exercises or even martial arts.
